So about a year ago we got our new deck finished, and out builder put up a hard-wired motion detector light. It was nice, and it worked for what we needed it to do at the time. At night we would be able to walk up to the deck and the lights would be on for us to enter the house.
Due to the current ongoing global situation that has been controlling us for the past 19 months my wife has been working from home. She’s gotten used to it, and honestly while challenging we’ve made the best of it, however she’s had some concerns during this time with people banging on the door. Not a knock knock I’m hear to tell you about amazing product X, but rather an insistent pounding on the door like they are trying to gain entry. Obviously this sets the dogs off and they start barking creating a time where my wife can not work until they are calmed down, but being a lone female at home alone when someone is pounding on the door has given her (rightfully I feel) some concerns. She mentioned a little while ago about how she was hoping that we could get a camera to see just who is at the door.
If an idea comes from the wife I do my best to try to make that happen as quickly as possible. 1) Its permission, 2) I genuinely want to make her happy and 3) I get new toys to play with! A win win win if you will. I started looking at different cameras, security systems and what-not. I really don’t want to spend a lot of money (mostly cause I’m a bit of a tight wad, but also we are looking at moving from this house in a couple of years so that is going to discount a full blown security system for now. After some research came across this Ring FloodLight Wired Camera and I picked it up. Today was spent replacing the old flood light with this one. Other then a quick trip to Home Depot to get some screws (the support bar that came with the light wouldn’t allow the provided screws to be installed so I used the previous bar but had to replace the screw. Interchangeable parts are awesome people!) the install went very quickly and smoothly. Then it was time to play with the Ring app and get the camera set up.
Again this just worked, and we have a camera/floodlight on our deck. If there is a problem is that we are getting notifications that there is movement on the deck through out the day. This I think is a matter of setting the motion zones a bit smaller and is a learning curve. Either way I have a new toy and my wife has the ability to see who is now out side on the deck when she is working.
